Cimzia (certolizumab pegol) is a a biologic medication that belongs to a classification of drugs known as tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers. TNF is a protein produced by the immune system and can be helpful in low amounts – It plays a role in several vital bodily functions, such as fat metabolism and clotting of blood cells when needed. However, in some cases the body produces too much TNF. Cimzia injections help reduce this excess amount of TNF. Read more to learn about Cimzia side effects, benefits, uses and cost.
Certain conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s can cause the overproduction of TNF, leading to excessive inflammation. Cimzia helps block this extra TNF that is present in the body before it can cause damage. By blocking TNF, Cimzia also modulates the immune response, which can help to slow down the progression of joint damage in arthritis and reduce inflammation in the gut in conditions like Crohn’s disease.
