6 Facts About Asthma

6 Facts About Asthma

Asthma is no laughing matter- one of the staggering facts about asthma is that approximately 10 people die from Asthma everyday in the U.S. Getting proper treatment for asthma can save you or a loved one’s life.

Allergic asthma is a type of asthma that is triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. With allergy season around the corner, it is important to be vigilant of the signs, symptoms, and effects that allergic asthma has on everyday Americans.

Facts About Asthma

1. Prevalence of Allergic Asthma

Allergic asthma affects a significant proportion of individuals with asthma in the United States, accounting for up to 60% of adult cases.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) reported that approximately 8.3% of Americans have asthma, with 20.4 million adults and 6.1 million children impacted by this condition.

2. Asthma by Age and Gender

The prevalence of asthma is greater in children, with 9.4% of children being affected compared

to 7.7% of adults. Furthermore, females have a higher likelihood of having asthma than males, with 9.2% of females experiencing asthma in contrast to 7.0% of males. This gender gap is thought to be the results of hormones such as estrogen on the female body after puberty.

3. Healthcare Utilization for Asthma

Patients diagnosed with asthma make 11 million visits to doctor’s offices and 1.7 million visits to hospital outpatient departments every year. Moreover, this condition leads to 439,000 hospitalizations and 1.3 million emergency room visits each year.

4. Asthma and Productivity

Asthma is a leading cause of missed school days, accounting for 13.8 million missed school days each year.

Asthma also leads to 14.2 million lost workdays for adults.

5. Economic Cost of Asthma

The estimated economic cost of asthma in the United States is $56 billion annually.

This includes healthcare costs, lost productivity, and other indirect costs.

6. Mortality from Asthma

More than 3,500 people die from asthma each year in the United States, with nearly half of these individuals being 65 years or older. Half of people with asthma experience at least one asthma attack each year, with children being more likely to have an attack than adults.

How is Allergic Asthma Treated?

Lifestyle changes, such as avoiding allergens and practicing good asthma management techniques, can be effective in managing allergic asthma. However, lifestyle changes may not always be enough to keep asthma symptoms at bay.

Allergic asthma can be treated with a variety of medications, including inhaled corticosteroids, long-acting beta-agonists, leukotriene modifiers, and immunomodulators. For some people with moderate to severe allergic asthma, Xolair (omalizumab) and Tezspire (tezepelumab-ekko) may be recommended as add-on therapies.

Xolair works by blocking IgE, an antibody that triggers allergic reactions, while Tezspire blocks a protein called TSLP, which is involved in inflammation in the airways.

Both medications have been shown to reduce asthma attacks and improve lung function in clinical trials. However, Xolair and Tezspire may not be appropriate for everyone, and your healthcare provider can help determine the best treatment plan for your allergic asthma.

Where Can I get my Infusion?

Typically, Xolair or Tezspire injections are administered in a hospital or provider’s office. Nevertheless, recent findings suggest that receiving treatment at a stand-alone or ambulatory infusion center (AIC) can lower infusion costs by up to 53%, while providing a more individualized and private experience.
