Ultomiris
What is Ultomiris?
Ultomiris is a biologic infusion that is used to treat a variety of autoimmune diseases that can affect the brain, blood cells, and spinal cord.
While these autoimmune diseases affect a variety of organ systems and tissues within the body, they are all debilitating and can lead to disability progression.
However, the autoimmune diseases that can be treated with Ultomiris share overactive proteins found in the body’s complement system, which is responsible for cleaning up damaged cells and helping the body heal after injury or infection.
Ultomiris works by binding to the C5 complement proteins to block their activation and allow for the removal of the C5 complement from the bloodstream altogether. This medication remains in your bloodstream for a long period of time, which allows for large gaps between infusions.
Inhibiting activation of these proteins, specifically, C5 can lessen symptoms and prevent relapse in these rare autoimmune diseases.
