Lemtrada
What is Lemtrada?
Lemtrada is used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that predominantly affects the brain and spinal column.
MS attacks the myelin sheath, which is responsible for protecting nerve cells through your central nervous system. As the myelin sheath erodes, nerve cells become damaged, preventing them from communicating and sending signals to each other. Overtime, this can affect motor skills, speech, bowel function, balance, and vision.
Although lemtrada is not a cure for MS, it is thought to help by preventing lymphocytes from attacking healthy nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord. Lemtrada has been shown to help decrease the number of relapses and may prevent or delay disability progression.
