Krystexxa is used to treat gout which has not responded to the usual treatments by limiting the body’s production of uric acid.
Uric acid is created when the body breakdown purines, a chemical compound that is found naturally in all living things. Normally, uric acid is able to pass through the urinary tract, but some people produce too much uric acid or their kidneys are unable to remove it from the bloodstream.
When uric acid stays in the body, it can results in hyperuricemia which may results in the formation of uric acid crystals in different joints throughout the body, resulting in gout.
Krystexxa is given to treat severe, treatment-refractory, chronic gout. It is a third line treatment in those in whom other treatments are not tolerated.
